Basic research has played a key role in the evolutionary process of the human race since the dawn of history. Though it may not produce temporary profit sometime, it does bring about profound influence to our life in the long term. Obsessed in the beauty of Nature sine my childhood, I decided to devote all my energy to explore the secrets of Nature . When I was a high school student, I borrowed the book “Atoms in the Family ” written by Laura Fermi. I was deeply moved by the research life of Enrico Fermi and his friends. They actively worked together with common interests, hitting on significant discoveries through mutual suggestion and stimulation. How I wish I could experience such cooperative and original life someday.
I have devoted most of my time to learn Physics, Mathematics and Biology, cultivated my intuition and imagination. Some problems were every difficult to solve, they always haunted in my mind for days, but when after unremitting thought, finally the inspiration flashed up. I felt that was one of the most exciting and joyful moment of life thought, finally the inspiration flashed up, I felt that was one of the most exciting and joyful moment of life .
My grades in the courses of Physics and Mathematics are the best in my class To facilitate further study in Physics I selected the courses “Applied Modern Algebra” focusing on the theory of group, ring, field and “The Principle of Real Analysis ” concerning the Lebesgue Measure and Calculus. In the course of Lab of Modern Physics, I did many interesting experiments such as Laser Raman Spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction studies, Mossbauer effect, Optical pumping magnetic resonance. Besides, through research work after class. I learned what had not been taught before, e.g. how to model the real world, how to apply the theory to practice and got more understanding about the projects.
As a student major in Optoelectronics at the Department of Electronic Engineering, I am also versed in Electronics, Computer Science, Communication System and Laser Technology through firm and a large quantity of practical training. For example, I have made the computer simulations of electronic circuits, programmed optimum algorithm for rapid search, designed and composited a simple CPU project, In our Lab of Lasers and Optoelectronics, I completed many experiments about tunable dye lasers, static properties of solid lasers and Q-switched dyes, second harmonic lasers, holography and optical modulators. These are all useful means for basic research.
Your graduate school has the marvelous academic environment and the high quality of Ph. D. Education I have expected. I hope I could join you to learn to be an independent researcher with broad base of natural sciences. I also hope to combine the Chinese Ancient Philosophy with Modern Science in the United States. Upon completion of the study, I shall return to my motherland and further my research to do more contribution for the common benefit of society. I shall return to my motherland graduate status endowed by Tsinghua University, so if I can not get your admission. I have to study by myself while making a living.
The unforgettable song often sounds in my mind. “Climb every mountain, ford every stream, follow every rainbow till you ” till you find your dream. A dream that will need all the love you can give, every day of your life for as long as you live. I am sure that someday my dream of research life will come true
Yours sincerely.

Choosing a degree in a telecommunications based discipline was not a hard decision to make. Since the summer holiday period of , when I completed six week of work experience for an __ company__, to working as a Switch Operations Technician for the popular mobile operator, ______, I have been involved, one way or an other in telecommunications. Since leaving employment with ______, I have found it very difficult to find work within the same industry. As it has been pointed out to me that I do not have a degree, I have decided to study towards gaining one to aid my career development.
What interests me incredibly about taking a degree in this discipline is the broad range of subject areas and engineering applications that it covers, as well as building on the foundation knowledge that I have gained, both theoretically and practically.
Once I have gained a degree, I plan on either restarting my career within a network operations environment or manufacturer, or carrying on to a postgraduate degree with the aim of specialising further in a preferred subject area.
As well as my interests in computing and telecommunications, I have other hobbies. I am a keen hill walker and regularly travel to North Wales for such pursuits. I am also a keen reader, enjoy keeping abreast of current affairs and enjoy socialising.
Looking back on my most recent academic career, I feel that I wasted a very good opportunity. I do think that I did not achieve my potential. Unfortunately, my work load at my then employer, my relative immaturity and my inattentiveness all added to an overall performance that did not represent my intellectual ability. I feel that in the last year I have matured and have a new found attitude towards work and my career progression. I think that this is the right time in my life to take a degree and feel ready to undertake such a demanding work load. I am very excited about the prospect of going to university and studying for a degree and hope that I am considered for this great opportunity.
Yours sincerely.

As a child, driven by an unnatural curiosity, I was often damaging some electronic devices by knocking them down and failing to reassemble just for finding out what they contained or how they worked. I have developed this habit later on computers with the difference that I did not caused any major damage to any.
My parents brought me my first computer when I was 9. At that time, only few persons knew how to use it and no one had time to teach me, so I had to learn by my own. As I was discovering more about software programs and hardware devices from books, IT magazines, articles, forums and practical research, my interest in them was increasing and computers have soon become one of my passions. In order to know more about it, I was working during my summer holiday in one of my friends' computer store, where I was installing the software on computers.
Next to computers, I like mathematics, which represents a way to relax me, to raise my morale when I am wretched or sad; solving or discussing about a difficult problem has always made me feel good. At school, it has been my favorite subject, at which I have excelled not only by taking great marks but by obtaining prizes and mentions in national, county and local competitions and Olympiads, such as a bronze medal at the National Mathematics Olympiad in 9th grade, first prize at the County Mathematics Olympiad in the 9th, 11th and 12th and several other prizes and award in national contests. My achievements are the results of a perpetuate preparation acquired with the help of the teachers from my school and from the program for Gifted Youth “Centru de excelenta”, which I attended in the last five years.
The love of mathematics and computers was the main factor that influenced my career decision, to work in the technology industry, which has become one the most important industries, being vital for modern economy and other fields as well as a part of every person's life. This decision determined my university course choice as one related to computer science, which will help me to acquire the education, skills and experience that my career requires.
My preparation for career began in high school, where I have studied Mathematics and Informatics. As a student, I focused on my profile subjects: mathematics, physics and computer science, which made me to distinguish in my classroom and in competitions, by winning prizes and awards such as the ones won at mathematical contests, a Honorable Mention at International Phi Contest at physics and a second and a third prize won at the national phase of the same contest, though I have not neglected the other ones, receiving high marks at most of them. In the mean time I have participated to an ecological program, initiated by my biology teacher, intended to decrease the environment pollution by presenting its effects.
As hobbies, I like to watch classical movies and to read about it and about actors, to read literature, history, nutrition and psychology, to solve puzzles and brain teasers, to play tennis and basketball, to swim, to listen to music, to drive, to discover new things about different cultures, to travel and to hang out.
I have always dreamed to study in UK because I admire people's mentality and nature, the education given to students, the living standards and I am fascinated by its history and its language. It would represent a great opportunity for me to discover new a culture and mentality and to live in a multicultural environment. I wish my qualities, skills and achievements make me a good candidate for your university and help me fulfill my dream, by attending a Computer Science course.
Yours sincerely.

Whenever I have set a goal in life, my mind has always drifted to the example set by Lester Wunderman. Growing up poor amidst the Great Depression, he went on to become a marketing mastermind, responsible for innovative direct media techniques such as the card and ‘Gold Box’.
Wunderman was never content to accept setbacks. When faced with a struggle, I have always sought to emulate him by emerging from obstacles - not with a sense of defeat - but with a renewed sense of determination and greater problem-solving skills. While at school, I underwent a two-day hospital procedure that caused me to miss a considerable amount of class; as a result, I fell behind in my studies and faced extensive makeup work. I quickly made a vow, however, not to allow my schoolwork to suffer. By spending many hours on my academics even while rebuilding my physical health, I continued to excel in school, achieving high grades in my GCSE’s.
After graduation, I decided to gain exposure to the insurance field, taking a position at Norwich Union Insurance. As a sales advisor, I primarily generated insurance quotes. After one year, I craved greater challenge, deciding to look for new opportunities. Transferring to the travel section, I assumed the position of Travel Executive, during which I performed many customer service tasks and managed the distribution of insurance certificates.Yet, I still yearned for more challenge, more risk and more opportunity. After two years of service at Norwich Union, I decided to enter the perpetually stimulating field of business. However, I wanted to pursue a business career after gaining a thorough mastery of the subject matter; therefore, I needed a university degree.
During 200 , I immersed myself in thorough preparations for business school, learning to write business plans, model businesses and carry out statistical tests. Through my self-directed study and experience in the Management position, I’m thoroughly familiar with the concepts behind strategy, marketing.
While an academic record can reveal much about a person’s character, illustrating traits such as discipline, determination, and responsibility, it does not provide the complete picture. Namely, grades and scores cannot detail lessons learned, challenges met and victories achieved.
Throughout my life, I have always sought greater intellectual stimulation, and this search has typically entailed abandonment of the familiar to pursue the unknown. In my business pursuits, I will continue to adopt this risk-taking approach and will not rest until I reach my maximum level of and operations. I now wish to expand my proficiency in these areas on the MBA program.

Having been born in the UK, with parents from Delhi and Kenya, I feel my background has given me an internationally diverse outlook. In my travels, I have met with both the affluence of Europe and the poverty existing in India. Such contrasts have compelled me to seek an understanding of the forces that drive the world economy, and why after centuries of economic theory such inequalities continue to exist.
Over the summer, I have been researching India's economic development, partly stimulated by the issues above. The Indian economy is a fascinating topic for me, not just due to my heritage, but because of the juxtaposition between rapid increases in wealth on the one hand and the Sub-Saharan African levels of poverty on the other. Another part of economics I find appealing is the use of theories. I have been introduced to the Tragedy of the Commons and the Coase Theorem's take on externalities. My interest in strategic decision-making has been boosted by Game Theory, which has developed an understanding of the situations faced by oligopolies and the implications of Nash equilibrium. Such theoretical models have led me to Experimental Economics and Charles Holt's 'Markets, Games and Strategic Behaviour', in an attempt to see if people actually behave in the way theory predicts.
Being awarded the Kirk Cup for Mathematics at school, encouraged me to take A-level Further Maths. My problem solving skills and ability to manipulate algebraic variables have since been enhanced, which is beneficial considering the numerical analysis involved in economics. Given the problematic nature in conducting controlled experiments, I am eager to explore the range of statistical tools available to economists.
Presently, I offer tutoring for GCSE Maths students, and have taught an adult how to use various PC applications in the past. Such an experience has stressed the need for planning, patience and presenting work coherently for others to follow. I have also used graphical design software to produce adverts for my Mother's beauty business, and have assisted with book-keeping for annual tax returns. It has been noticeable how economic factors affect such a business; for example how demand for different treatments has changed with the credit crunch.
My internet browser's homepage is set to prompt me with the latest headlines from the BBC Business website, as it is a priority for me to keep up-to-date with the world around me. In addition, for different opinions, I also frequently read articles on economics in various newspapers. Reading books by economists, such as John Kay, has led me to appreciate better how concepts have developed over time. These include 'The Penguin History of Economics' by Backhouse and Levitt's 'Freakonomics', which I found entertaining, but thought lacked true economic substance. Besides reading, my other hobbies include remixing music on the computer and using Investopedia.com, on which I have a virtual portfolio of shares. As a representative of my college's debating team, my communication skills have greatly improved. At our next debate, I will be arguing for the wider use of congestion charges.
The recent economic turmoil has reinforced my belief in how economics is truly an integral part of our lives. University will provide the ideal environment in which to strengthen and test my understanding of such a discipline, whilst being a place where I can formulate and contribute my own theories to the subject. After receiving full marks in AS-level Economics, I have set myself a high standard, and I wish to continue my ambitions in the finance industry. However, I recognise that my passion for economics will lead me to many more career horizons.
Yours sincerely.

Marketing experts like to classify people into different generation groups, believing that people of the same age share similar value and attitudes. I agree with those experts'' theory in that it emphasizes the connection between the circumstances of one's upbringing and one's later outlook on life. My personality, talents, values, even career choice have been profoundly influenced by my family life and upbringing in Taiwan.
My name is Peter Huang and I’ve grown up in Ten-Mou, a multicultural neighborhood in suburban Taipei. During the early years of my childhood, my parents exerted a profound influence over my development. Though neither of them was involved in business, by watching their integrity and hard work, I learned more about the true meaning of success than I would ever have in any classroom.
My father is an Air Force colonel. He joined the R.O.C Air Force at the age of 14, struggling to achieve his personal best as the supply division chief of the R.O.C. Air Force Academy. Unlike some officers in the military, who depended on family relationship and privilege to get promoted, my father gained his position by hard work and assiduity. He thus emphasized the importance of industriousness when it came to my education. When I was 10, I attended a speech contest. During the week before the contest, my father and I spent two hours a day together, organizing the lecture content, adjust my rhythm, and rehearsing. I was a shy, soft-spoken child, and found speaking in public difficult at first. But through my father's patient efforts and his believe in the rewards of hard work, I gradually became an excellent public speaker and won many of the contests that followed. As a result of the experiences such as this, I learned a very strong work ethic and emulated some of my father's best characteristics - perseverance and dedication.
These qualities served me well as I entered mandatory military service in Taiwan and faced many difficult situations. I once led a squad to enact the typhoon disaster relief action in Nan-tou. We had one week in which to salvage a factory that was half-buried in mud. As the squad commander, I not only supervised, but also participated in the demanding and seemly endless digging work. And each night, after an exhausting work when all other soldiers were asleep, I spent extra hours checking if there were sufficient supplies and making plans for the next day's relief action. When I finally laid down to sleep, I could not help but reflect on how much I had developed, as both a person and a leader, since that first speech contest.
My mother has a warm and kind personality, and has always reached out to the expatriates in our neighborhood. She organized a language exchange club with the American students in local colleges, hoping to increase understanding of Taiwanese and American cultures through the exchange of language. I took part in the club when I was still in elementary school. This childhood multi-cultural experience instilled in me an active personality and willingness to interact with people of different cultures. In particularly, it strengthened my interest in American and my desire to work and live there one day.
My mother’s emphasis on international exchange and cooperation has led me to work for the Fulbright Foundation in Taipei as a research assistant. This position allows me to interact with educational associations in the United States and to take part in international conferences. I once participated in a venture capital seminar in Hsin-Chu, working on the issue of graduate level technology management education with representatives of major high-tech companies and academic institutions. Last November, I represented the Foundation in an international Tele-conference in Taipei. The conference was conducted both in English and in Chinese and was hosted by the Prime of Ministry of Education. My work has also given me the opportunity to know and become friends with exceptional Fulbright scholars from the United States.
While my childhood years shaped my character, it was my high school and college years which led to my interest in business. 1988 was both a determining year to my career choices and a turning point in Taiwan's economy. As people familiar with Taiwan's modern economic history know, the exchange rate of the New Taiwan Dollar to U.S. Dollars moved from 40:1 to 25:1 in that year under the overwhelming pressure of American government. Thus meant that the traditional advantage of Taiwan's economy, low labor costs, was no longer our strength. People everywhere were talking about the future of Taiwan's economy. Out of a young man's passion, I wanted to contribute my talent and effort to my country. That was the time at which I made up my mind that someday, I will make Taiwan-made products famous world-widely, like those produced by IBM, Intel, or Microsoft.
This teenage naive patriotic dream transformed into an interest in business administration and economics after I graduated from Taipei First Senior High School. I focused my college study on manufacturing administration and economics. From four years of lectures, seminars, and in-factory study in the department of Industrial Engineering at National Formosa University, I acquired skills in quality insurance, manufacturing planning and control, and factory improvement and diagnostic methods. In my economic class, I learned how prices, preferences, and incomes affect people's demand of goods from the microeconomic. I also acquired knowledge of how various factors - government policies, currency exchange rate, and balance of international trade - affect a country's economics growth. My interest in business, however, is not limited to industrial engineering and economics. In my junior year, I also took 6 credits of accounting courses and learned the knowledge of basic accounting principles, financial statements, and managerial accounting. To acquire a more thorough understand of management information systems, I chose “Alumni Association Database Management System for Department of Industrial Engineering” as my graduate activity project. From each step of developing the database system, I learned solid skills in FoxPro programming and enterprise demand analysis.
I am thankful that my parents provided me with an environment that encouraged me to develop my personality and an intellect for which I am remembered. With a deeply-instilled work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, and a high level of motivation, I believe I will enrich the professional and social environment at your esteemed Buchman School and continue to grow as a expert in high-tech industry.
Yours sincerely.
