Are you living outside the USA but planning to attend an American law school? Here are a few important details you should know about the tests that will be required of you as part of your application.
WHAT IS THE LSAT AND WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?
The LSAT, or Law School Admission Test, is a standardized test required of all applicants to J.D. programs (if you’re applying to an LLM program, you won’t need to take it). It’s a half-day test that’s administered all over the world, usually on a Saturday. Accommodations are possible for those who observe the Sabbath. A full list of all international testing centers that provide the LSAT can be found here.
The LSAT tests reading comprehension, analytical reasoning and logical reasoning. It consists of five sections of multiple choice questions. You have thirty-five minutes to answer each section. Of these five sections, only four are scored and one is a “test” section with answers that may appear on future versions of the test. However, you won’t know which section is the test section. A writing sample is also required, which is not scored, but is sent to any law school to which you apply.
Many law schools require applicants to take the LSAT by December for enrollment the following fall, so plan ahead! If you’re unhappy with your score, you can re-take the test a maximum of three times in any two-year period.
Applicants may spend anywhere from one month to one year preparing for the LSAT. Generally speaking, the more you prepare the better chance you have at raising your score. Taking practice exams at regular intervals throughout your preparation will show you the areas in which you’re excelling and the areas in which you need improvement. Finding out the score requirements at your schools of choice can provide a benchmark for you.
WHAT IS THE TOEFL, AND WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?
The TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language, assesses the test-taker’s proficiency with the English language. It is administered by the ETS, or Educational Testing Service, at centers in 165 countries. All American institutions of higher education require TOEFL scores from foreign applicants.
The TOEFL has four sections which test your skill level in the areas of writing, reading, listening and speaking. The entire test takes approximately three and a half hours to complete. Some testing centers offer a paper test and others offer an internet-based test. Finding out in advance which one you’ll be taking can help relieve your stress level by knowing what to expect.
There are no limits to the number of times you can take the TOEFL. Some TOEFL test-takers schedule multiple tests the same week and submit the best score to their schools. It’s important to note that TOEFL scores are only valid for two years.
There are a variety of ways to prepare for the TOEFL from formal test preparation materials to watching films and listening to songs in English. Taking practice tests is very important. This process familiarizes you with the test’s structure and shows you the areas in which you need improvement.
