Even though your resume is one of millions in Monster's database, it can still stand out from the job-seeking crowd. Use these five tips to help your resume get a first -- and second glance.
Write a Newsworthy Headline
Your resume's headline is the first thing a recruiter or hiring manager sees when sifting through resumes. Make it pop. Highlight qualities that set you apart. Instead of marketing Professional,Marketing Pro and Direct-Mail Expert might speak louder to a recruiter who needs someone to take over the company's direct-mail campaign.
Recruiters agree that the headline can get you noticed. If you're comfortable that you know exactly what you want to do, that's a great way to flag yourself, says Kent Kirch, global recruitment director at Deloitte. otherwise, if you need to be more general, I would try to get something in there about a key competency.
Sell Yourself with a Strong Career Objective
Your objective doesn't need to be long. In fact, Kirch recommends keeping it short.
Remember, recruiters and hiring managers may be scanning through hundreds of resumes, so make sure your objective has some oomph. Think about the specific value you offer the employer and state it concisely in your career objective. You can create up to five different resumes in your Monster account, and each one can have a different objective that is appropriate for a certain type of job.
Here's what a good objective might look like:
Accomplished and talented financial analyst seeking to leverage extensive background in data gathering and analysis in a senior financial analyst role. Extremely motivated for career change goal and eager to contribute to a company's HR division.
Use Numbers to Your Advantage
Numbers and concrete examples can validate your achievements. Numbers are often easier to remember than words.
What were the number of people you were responsible for? What were the volume of sales that you were responsible for? How much growth occurred while you were in that position? Those kinds of numbers add a lot of credibility to the picture you're trying to paint.
To illustrate the point, consider which of these statements would make a more lasting impression:
•Worked diligently to surpass sales quota on an ongoing basis.
•Exceeded $1 million quarterly sales quota by at least 25% for 6 consecutive quarters.
Of course, citing numbers may be easier for a sales pro than a technical writer, but even occupations that aren't number-driven can usually be quantified somehow. For example, a technical writer could include:
•Helped reduce help center call volume by 12% through improved technical instructions.
•Decreased technical writing budget by 20% by completing more assignments in house.
Concentrate on Keywords
When you're searching for potential jobs on Monster, you probably use the keyword search. There's a good chance recruiters are also using keywords when they're looking through resumes. So think about what keywords a recruiter might use to find someone to fill your desired position and incorporate those into your resume.
Have No Mercy for Mistakes
Believe it or not, you can rummage through a lot of resumes before you find one without errors. Every recruiter sees his share of bloopers, spelling mistakes and grammatical slip-ups. Obviously, this won't do much to help your cause.
Particularly in jobs where precision is an important competency, that can really work against you, says Kirch. It's pretty much common sense: If you're not going to take the time to do that for your resume, you're probably not going to do it every day at work.
Make your resume the one that is totally flawless. Not only should you review your resume several times, but you should also have someone with good language skills do so as well.
Your resume could be your ticket to the job of your dreams. Follow these tips to make it a reality.
